A10 REDMOND SPOKESMAN • TUESDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2022 COFFEE BREAK FLASHBACK Plans filed for 83-room motel in 1997 100 Years Ago Dec. 14, 1922 — 13-acre ranch is to be prepared George L. Burtt of San Francisco arrived in Redmond the fore part of the week to look after his large holding there- abouts. In the interview with Mr. Burtt, the Spokesman reporter was informed that he intended to center his energies on the clearing up of his 13-acre property under the Highline ditch at Powell Butte in order to have it in shape for putting into potatoes this coming spring. Mr. Burtt says that the Deschutes County potatoes are, in his estimation, the best quality in the world. 75 Years Ago Dec. 18, 1947 — Post office sees biggest Yule rush Cancellations are running about 15 to 20 per cent greater at the Redmond post office during the current Christmas rush than at any previous time and receipts are soaring even higher, postmaster Arthur Tifft reports. As a service to patrons, the post office will remain open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and parcel service will be given between 10 and 11 o’clock Sunday morning and also for a short time Christmas morning to enable addresses to call for parcels. Tuesday was a peak day for cancellations, with 12,000 outgoing letters being run through the canceling machine, while approximately 80 sacks of parcels are leaving the office each day. 50 Years Ago Dec. 20, 1972 — COCC budget board at work COCC board and budget board members will meet in Bend Jan. 10 for their second work session on the pro- posed COCC operating budget for 1973–74. Represent- ing the Redmond area will be Ron Bryant and Betty Stan- dard. The proposed college budget, as outlined recently, calls for a tax levy rate of $1.35 per $1,000 true cash value, the same levy rate that was approved by district voters last year. Dr. Frederick Boyle, president of COCC, said that the rate quote will almost certainly be less than that after the legislature takes action on college funding. Boyle said, “if COCC gets an estimated 6 per cent increase in state funds, as it is expected to do, we pledge to reduce this budget by that amount.” The total tax levy is up $88,032 over the last year’s ballot figure of $996,570. The budget is scheduled to be voted upon March 12. 25 Years Ago Dec. 17, 1997 — Plans filed for 83-room motel The city has received an application from Motel 6 to build an 83-room motel on S. Highway 97 across from Napa Auto Parts. The three-story budget motel would rival the size of the 85-room Super 8 Motel that opened in June on High- way 97 at the Yew Avenue Interchange. Jayanti Patel, owner of the Budget Inn in Madras, owns the property at 2247 S. Hwy. 97, south of the former Ra- dio Shack store, where Motel 6 would build. Super One Inc. of Beaverton has applied for a city site and design review of the project. The Community Development Department already has granted the applicant pre-site plan approval on the property. A public comment period closes Mon- day.
